sweet lens
The lens is very sharp at all apertures. It works very well for portraits with good bokeh (nice out of focus areas and transition, close-ups and of course anything that requires tilt/shift capability.I use it on both the Nikon d300 and d700 bodies and am very pleased with the images that it produces. The lens is smooth and easily worked for all operations and the manual focus is smooth and precise.Unlike the previous reviewer, I don't have a big problem with the tilt/shift configuration. It works fine the way it is, for the vast majority of applications. I don't disagree that it would be nice to be able to easily switch the alignment back and forth, but I don't think that is a big deal.

My favorite macro lens
I do a fair bit of macro photography, and lately this lens has become my favorite.I tend to be "old school" and for a long time, my setup included an old bellows system with the Nikon 60mm macro. Honestly, I didn't use the bellows so much to get more magnification - it was all about having the tilts and shifts so I could choose exactly what parts of the image stayed in focus. Depth of field is so minimal close up, I can't see how you do without tilts and shifts to get reasonable emphasis on your subject. Of course, the drawback is that a bellows becomes a fairly cumbersome thing to work with. It's all manual (exposure, focus, etc) and often you only have a dim image in the viewfinder to work with. Lots of trial and error to get the right settings - but when you do, it's a wonderful thing.Enter the 85mm 2.8 PC-E and that whole topic changes. Now, I have something that gives me most of the capability of my bellows setup, but in a much faster and more...

Product Description

The PC-E Micro NIKKOR 85mm f/2.8D Perspective Control (PC) lens corrects linear distortion in order to better replicate images assen by the human eye, including straightening the converging lines of rectilinear objects such as buildings, while also introducing welcome command over depth-of-field. Their versatility makes these the perfect lens complement for a myriad of applications, including photographing architecture, nature, interiors and still-life especially product photography. When shooting subjects, such as tall buildings with a conventional lens, composition often calls for tilting the axis of a camera. This typically results in a significant distortion of converging lines, impacting the desired visual accuracy of the image. A PC-E NIKKOR lens' "shift" control provides correction for this type of distortion. "Shift" control can also give a photographer the ability to "effectively" move the apparent position of the camera providing further perspective versatility, allowing, for example, the ability to avoid unwanted reflections in an image. A PC-E lens' "tilt" control gives photographers additional creative control over depth-of-field. Known as the Scheimpflug principal,tilt-shift lenses are capable of modifying the focal plane of the lens, allowing the extension or limitation of the point of critical sharpness in the image. The combination of "tilt" and "shift" controls featured in all PC-E NIKKOR lenses gives photographers extraordinary control over perspective control which simply is not possible with conventional lenses. A special tilt/shift mechanism gives users up to +/- 11.5mm shift for perspective control and +/- 8.5-degree tilt control for creative focus. The Perspective Control lenses correct distortion and vanishing point issues with convenient side-mounted controls at 1mm / 1-degree intervals that will adjust the fo Top to learn more

Perfect for portrait, nature, and commercial photography, the Nikon medium-telephoto 85mm, f/2.8D lens lets you control the perspective more than with other lenses, with the ability to tilt, shift, and rotate while you shoot. The lens offers a wide shifting range--plus or minus 11.5mm--with a tilting range of plus or minus 8.5 degrees to provide exceptional perspective control. In addition, the lens revolves plus or minus 90 degrees in 30-degree increments, providing versatile tilt/shift shooting effects. As a result, you can enjoy all kinds of distorted perspectives and unique angles, giving your shots extra life.

The lens is coated with Nikon's Nano Crystal Coat, which virtually eliminates internal reflections across a wide range of wavelengths to produce even greater image clarity. The high-performance Nikon Super Integrated Coating (SIC), meanwhile, offers superior color performance and substantially reduced ghosting and flare. Other details include an auto-aperture control with an electromagnetic diaphragm (requires Nikon D3, D700, or D300 D-SLR camera), and a rounded nine-blade diaphragm that produces a more natural appearance for out-of-focus image elements.

Microscope for the masses...
Bought this for my classroom use with some special education kids. They loved it and it worked well. The software that comes with it leave A LOT to be desire. Very limited in scope and functionality. It was also somewhat annoying that there is an increasing lag in the computer image as you increase the resolution (zooming in more on the image.) You move the scope, or change the focus, and there is a serious lag in what you see on the screen at these higher resolutions. It makes focusing very difficult at high resolutions. Not a problem at the lower settings. The snapshot feature is nice.

8x vs 10x vs 12x
I've written a review about the last iteration of these binoculars and I won't repeat it here. Briefly, these are the best binoculars you can get without spending big bucks, and I think they are the cheapest binoculars you should even consider buying (while there might be an exception to this, cheaper binoculars are bad enough to be worthless and a complete waste of money). These binoculars are three times as good as what you can get for $100 and 90% as good as what you can get for $2,000. They are better than most similarly priced binoculars, and better than many much more expensive binoculars.Since this is one of the most common binoculars bought by beginners (for good reason), I thought it would be helpful to have a breakdown of the uses of the different magnifications as many buyers have probably not used binoculars extensively. I am mostly into birding and wildlife watching, so beware of that bias if your needs are different.Don't know what size binoculars...

Great birding and bugging bins
These binoculars are mostly just like the old Nikon Monarchs, with maybe just a little more light in low light conditions. An excellent pair of binoculars for the price, five years ago binoculars of this quality would have been more like $500-600. An especially cool feature of all the Nikon Monarchs is the close focus distance, which with my eyes is probably even a little under four feet. If you like looking at butterflies and dragonflies as well as birds, these binoculars are an excellent choice for their price tag.

Monarch 8x42 Binocular
I purchased these based on the performance review from Cornell. I am thouroughly pleased and actually purchased a second pair for my wife. The low light performance of these was more than adequate for our birding needs in early morning or late evening. The brightness is astonishing compared to a binocular of lesser quality. I will never go back to a cheap bino. These have helped tremendously bringing our birding experience to the next level. They offer a superb level of contrast and sharpness required for bird identification. I can easily see markings on a sparrow at 50 feet or more in low light. The eye relief is great and having retractable eyecups even works well with eyeglasses. These binos are mean to be used heavily, just about bulletproof in most conditions. I would advise people to change out the neckstrap with a harness. My neck never hurts and they don't swing with a harness, the Leupold is excellent. If you are a birder and want to make a good...

Another fantastic product from CaseLogic
This is a very well thought out bag that really stands out from others in its class. For someone like me, who travels with their gear and does a good bit of hiking and camping, a rugged bag is essential. The organizational possibilities are endless with this pack. The interior is composed of numerous foam components (coated in soft felt) equipped with Velcro. It is super easy to rearrange the padding inside to give any lens a snug fit. I threw in my 200mm zoom and 1.4 prime lenses today, quickly readjusted the padding, zipped it up, and I was out the door without a worry. Of course, I still had room for about four other lenses. I also had my 20-year-old Minolta camera in there, and the design of the hammock and the way the padding angled around the camera body gave it a very secure fit. The memory foam designed to sit on top of the camera body is dense, but it is covered in felt and seems safe enough to have pressed against the display screen of a DSLR. In short,...

Great backpack but with a couple of minor drawbacks
This is a great camera backpack, and for the price, can't really be beat. However, there are a couple of things that I dislike about the bag.1) The padded dividers are quite thick and take up a chunk of space within the backpack.2) The hammock system for the camera is neat but it also results in a lot of wasted space at the top of the backpack on either side of where the DSLR body sits.3) The zipper for the main flap goes down all the way to the bottom but due to the rubberized "bucket" at the bottom, has to stop above the bucket section at the base of the backpack. This is inconvenient because the lower most compartments of the backpack are hard to get at since the flap cannot be pulled apart any more. That space is pretty much dead space because anything that is stored in there will not be easily accessible unless you lay the bag completely flat and then struggle a bit with pulling your lens out of the bottom most compartment.4) The...

Decent bag for Camera, Lenses and Laptop
This is my second second Case Logic Backpack this size. The older model was ok, but didn't feel durable, and broke a couple zippers within months, so I was a little hesitant about this one. This model does seem a little heavier, more durable, and the zippers seem to be better, but the side straps for the tripods didn't last long. One broke within a month or little over. They are pretty good bags, wish they would be a little more durable. Because of that I have to go 3 stars...

Great for new D7000 owners
I had a D40 before receiving the D7000 as a gift. The D40 is an entry level camera and very easy to use. The D7000 is mid-level and is so customizable that I would become overwhelmed every time I tried to read a couple of pages of the owner's manual.I could not decide between this book and Nikon D7000 Digital Field Guide. Each of these books received mixed reviews here on Amazon so I bought them both when the price was right. I read a few pages of the Field Guide, and while it was good information, I kept coming back to the Dummies book. It breaks the information down into manageable sections.I really like how this Dummies book starts with a very high level overview. It goes over all the controls & menus on the D7000 giving a brief explanation of what each one is for. At the same time it tells where in the book to go for more details. For example, it shows how to set your white balance and gives a very short description of what the white balance is. It then...

A Very Helpful Book!
While I'm no stranger to higher end SLR cameras, the purchase of a Nikon D7000 was my first foray into a higher end digital SLR (dSLR). I've been using a Nikon D40x for the past 3+ years and jumped at the chance to add multiple still features plus video to my picture taking options by getting the D7000.When it arrived, I was a little intimidated. There were multiple options for features that I knew little or nothing about. The manual itself was a bit overpowering as well. I really didn't use the new camera all that much but then I found Nikon D7000 for Dummies. The book is well laid out and offers a nice mix of camera terminology, photographic basics and then more technical information related to the D7000's various options. The fundamental material served as a good refresher then the book moved into the many options that the camera has to offer and a good description of each one. While the discussions are somewhat technical at times, they are done so in a...

learn your D7000 FAST
This book is great for people who are new to photography and professionals who are new to the D7000. You don't need any photography background knowledge to read this book and learn everything there is to know about your Nikon D7000. Before purchasing my D7000 I was a point and shoot kind of girl. I decided to upgrade... big time. Though intimidating at first, the D7000 is actually quite user friendly once you gain a basic knowledge of the features and their purposes. Nikon D7000 For Dummies will help you do just that. It lays it all out for you in well organized sections. The book is great to read from cover to cover with your camera by your side for hands-on training. It's also great to use as a quick reference guide when you need to know something on the fly. In order to get really comfortable and confident with your D7000 you have to spend hours practicing. I do this around my house and yard with Nikon D7000 For Dummies by my side. I may not be a pro just yet, but I have learned so...

Much better than anticipated. Pre-sale reviews are overly critical
I was looking for a new digital camera to replace my Leica V-Lux 1 which a bought a couple of years ago. I sold the Leica and was planning to use the money to buy a current camera. My dilemma was whether to stay with a super zoom camera (flaws and all) or take a step toward an entry model DSLR. I also wanted a 2009 model as I wanted the most current technology available so I would be less inclined to feel the need to buy an "upgrade" in another year or so. Ultimately, I narrowed my search down to the Sony HX1, Canon SX1, Panasonic G1 and Sony a300. For me, build quality and feel, size (travel convenience) and lens versatility were my main priorities (not necessarily in that order). I think it is very important to figure out exactly what you really want out of your camera so you get a good fit that matches your expectations. So for me, low light picture quality was not a major concern as I expected to use the camera mostly outdoors or in good lighting situations. And in-door...

BEST COMBINATION OF POSSIBILITIES
Before to order Sony HX1 through Amazon, I did a lot of reserch works with all possible information online, my considerations were among Canon SX1,Canon T1i, Nikon P90 and Sony HX1.Now after almost two weeks of practice with Sony HX1,I can surely to say it's really the best combination of all cool possibilities you can find on current market: Possibility 1: Super optical Zoom up to 34X( equv. to 952mm)if you use 1.7x tele-conversion lens which is not offered by Canon SX1. DSLRs cannot easily reach this zoom range unless you are rich enough and strong enough to bring those lenses in your backpack. Possibility 2: Great picture quality with the sharpness comparable to most low-end DSLRs if you have enough kownledge and technics of photograghy, for example by adjusting ISO, aperture or speed etc. HX1 offers almost all features you can find in DSLRs when you turn the mode dial to M,A,S,P. The best picture is not made by the camera, it's by your brain. Sony HX1's...

Great camera but no DSLR
** Modified 05-08-09 by adding nitpick #5 :) ***I had been a digital point-and-shoot camera person for about 12 years, since the Canon Powershot 100. Over that time, I've upgraded to various Powershot models until 2 years ago, got a Sony A100 DSLR. I love that camera and have lots of fun taking pictures with it.For work, we had been using my A100 to take product photos. It was nice having a remote, and all of the great DSLR features that come along with that camera. But, I have been without my A100 for a while, and was missing it dearly, so I decided to get another camera for work, and was having trouble deciding between the DSC-HX1 and the A200 DSLR.I've been playing with both, and have decided to return the A200 and keep the DSC-HX1. Here's why:1. The other people helping me take these product photos don't have any DSLR experience, and don't share my enthusiasm for photography. They prefer point-and-shoot. So from an ease of use...

Top Row: Nikon 45mm PC-E and Nikon 85mm PC-E lenses. Bottom Row: Compass, Remote Shutter Release, Nikon D3s w/ Nikon 24mm PC-E attached as well as RRS L-Bracket attached, spare battery. Middle Row: Microfiber cleaning cloth and lens cleaning items, RRS BH55 tripod head [in bag for transport, helps tripod balance better on bag], B+W 2 stop and 6 stop ND filters, B+W Circular Polarizer. This pack has all the normal adjustments for shoulder/waistbelt/etc that a normal backpacking pack has which makes it very easy to adjust the load to ride better so the heavy weight doesn’t break you the first day. So when deployed, ie when shooting, I drop a good 9-10 lbs + tripod out of the bag and into my hands and the bag gets significantly lighter. I will be photographing waterfalls throughout Northern Arkansas over the next week and with previous experience I decided that the 3 tilt-shift lenses would be most appropriate. Right Side Pocket : Spare memory cards, another cleaning cloth, and hex wrenches for tripod/head/plates/etc.

Pitfalls include softness when shifted, massive color fringing when shifted, and distortion (distortion on a shifted lens requires much more work to correct than a normal lens…and if you’re shifting, you’re probably shooting things that easily... If not it will have to be manual (ie you compose with aperture wide open, then close it down manually before shooting, ala Nikon’s older PC lenses like the 28mm 3. I wonder if they’ll be able to include the electronic aperture as implemented in Nikon’s PC-E lenses. The nikon 24 PC is not wide enough compared to the 14-24. I imagine when focusing at infinity, or the HyperFocal point, you could use it on an L bracket with a pano head, but why bother with such an expensive lens at that point, just use a prime lens instead. My 24mm PC-E is great, but the controls are fiddly, it still has a small amount of distortion, and on Nikon’s non D3/D4 bodies it’s either functional but cramped (D700/D300) or severely limited (D7000 and lower). You do have shift movements with the 24PC-E, I think you get something like 14mm if you shift in both directions 5mm and then stitch, possibly more. Good shift lenses aren’t easy to design or produce, but I hope Samyang creates something good. I wonder if a 17mm tilt shift lens would give a wider viewing angle when compared to the 14-24 adjusted for verticality in lightroom. guess nikon will not intro this 17mm as very low demand. Also Nikon, please make the adjustment a better screwdrive mecahnism, venier drive with a positive lock would be nice. A wider T/S would have been preferable for me, but I’ll keep praying Nikon will eventually come through there. That said, I don’t personally find a 36mm equivalent shift lens terribly useful.
